With its strategically favorable location, Colombia is well-positioned to actively advance regional integration Colombia’s Mines and Energy Minister

Caspian Energy (CE): What are the current priorities within Colombia’s energy sector, and how do you intend to address them?

Omar Andrés Camacho Morales, Minister of Mines and Energy of Colombia: In Colombia, we are implementing the “Fair Energy Transition” program, a process aimed at transforming energy production and consumption methods by replacing fossil fuels (such as coal, oil, and natural gas) with renewable sources (including solar, wind, and hydropower). This transition involves not just technical, but also social and economic factors, which is why our objective is to transform the economy by creating high-quality jobs in renewable energy, sustainable mobility, and emerging energy industries.

Through the term “fair,” we stress that these changes must consider the needs of vulnerable and historically marginalized communities, not just serve particular groups. In contrast, we focus on the well-being of people living in these regions, the dignity of workers, and the preservation of our ecosystems. The key goals of the FET are to reduce structural inequality, redistribute wealth, and ease the impacts of the climate crisis.

With this goal in mind, we are executing the following priority plans for the transformation of the mining and energy sectors in Colombia:

The 6 GW Plan is focused on integrating 6 GW into the energy matrix through the implementation of major projects utilizing non-conventional renewable energy sources by 2026.

The goal of the Energy communities and territories plan is to democratize energy access by installing photovoltaic panels in the regions with high energy poverty.

Electromobility is focused on transforming the country’s energy consumption by developing charging infrastructure for vehicles and shifting to transportation modes, both land and water, that do not rely on fossil fuels.

Offshore wind energy focuses on integrating energy resources into the energy matrix by advancing offshore wind energy projects. Colombia has become the first country in Latin America and the Caribbean to design a competitive process for the development of such projects.

New forms of energy are aimed at exploring the energy resources by leveraging our potential in geothermal energy, hydrogen, and bioenergy.
