Moldova and Azerbaijan have developed a strong partnership in the energy sector

Caspian Energy (CE): Honourable Minister, following your recent discussions in Baku with Azerbaijani counterparts and energy-sector leaders, how do you envision the future development of Moldova's cooperation with Azerbaijan and other key energy partners in strengthening energy security, diversifying supply sources, and advancing sustainable energy development?

Dorin Junghietu, Minister of Energy of the Moldovan Republic:  Moldova and Azerbaijan have developed a strong and pragmatic partnership in the energy sector, particularly during a period when energy security has become one of the most important challenges for our region. Our recent discussions in Baku confirmed that there is significant potential to further deepen this cooperation.

For Moldova, energy security means diversification of supply sources, routes, technologies, and partnerships. Azerbaijan has become an important contributor to regional energy security and a reliable partner for the region. We see opportunities to expand cooperation in natural gas supplies, regional energy infrastructure, energy trading, and knowledge exchange.

At the same time, Moldova is pursuing an ambitious transformation of its energy sector. In just a few years, we have moved from near-total dependence on a single supplier of gas and electricity to a diversified and interconnected energy system that is increasingly integrated with European markets.

We are investing heavily in new electricity interconnections with Romania, expanding local electricity generation especially from renewable sources, developing energy storage capacities, and modernizing our networks. In this context, cooperation with Azerbaijan can also evolve beyond traditional energy resources. We are interested in exchanging experience and exploring opportunities in renewable energy, green technologies, digitalization of the energy sector and innovative solutions that strengthen resilience and competitiveness.

More broadly, Moldova believes that regional cooperation is essential to addressing the interconnected challenges of energy security, affordability, and decarbonization. These challenges require coordinated efforts and shared solutions across borders. Strong partnerships between countries such as Moldova and Azerbaijan contribute not only to our national interests but also to thestability and resilience of the wider region. We look forward to continuing our dialogue and translating our shared ambitions into concrete projects that deliver tangible benefits for our citizens and economies.
