Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer Austrian Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism

Caspian Energy (CE): Austria has shown remarkable stability in a volatile global market. What are the core pillars of the government’s current strategy to ensure long-term industrial competitiveness?

Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer, Federal Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism of Austria:  Austria’s current Industrial Strategy 2035 is built on strengthening the country’s industrial competitiveness through innovation, resilience, and sustainable transformation. At its core is a strong focus on developing and deploying key technologies across industry. These include artificial intelligence, microelectronics and chips, quantum technologies, cybersecurity, advanced sensor systems, and environmental and clean technologies, which are seen as critical drivers of future industrial value creation.

To support this technological focus, the strategy combines several pillars: strong investment in research, technology and innovation; secure and affordable energy for the green transition; a skilled workforce through education and targeted training in key technologies; modern infrastructure and resilient supply chains; and close cooperation at the European level. Together with improved financing conditions and reduced bureaucracy, these measures position Austria as a high-tech, sustainable industrial hub in Europe for the long term.

In addition, the strategy emphasizes strengthening resilient European value chains and reducing strategic dependencies, ensuring that Austria’s industry remains competitive and secure in an increasingly volatile global environment.
