Caspian Energy (CE): Your Excellency, could you kindly outline the top priorities of your administration in driving sustainable and inclusive national development across the Maldives?
Mohamed Muizzu, President of the Republic of Maldives: The administration aims to initiate a transformative paradigm shift by streamlining and strengthening the national development process through formulation of a 20-year National Development Plan, titled “The Resilient Maldives 2024: Prosperity for All.” The Plan will be supported by the necessary legal frameworks to ensure its effectiveness and sustainability.
In alignment with the President’s pledge to attain developed nation status by 2040, the formulation of this plan is already underway. It will serve as a strategic framework for resource allocation guiding both sectoral and regional development. The plan will address key priorities across economic, social, environmental, urban development and governance sector, thereby fostering sustainable and inclusive socio -economic growth for the Maldives over the next 20 years. The plan also incorporates robust mechanisms for implementation, monitoring and evaluation to ensure accountability and measurable progress.
The Maldives remains firmly committed to building and sustaining financial and economic resilience, recognizing it as a critical pillar for achieving sustainable development. In line with this commitment, a key focus of this plan is to identify and implement strategic initiatives aimed at economic diversification across all sectors. These efforts are designed to foster a more empowered and self-sustaining economy, thereby strengthening the Maldives’ position at a global scale.
This includes the development of new projects and industries, such as the establishment of the Maldives International Financial Centre (MIFC), which aims to enhance the country’s reputation as a regional financial hub. Furthermore, the plan emphasizes workforce development in the nation’s most significant economic sector, including initiatives such as the creation of a dedicated training resort for the tourism industry, providing benefits not only at the local level but at the international level.
A key component of the planning process will be extensive stakeholder engagement including public consultations. We believe that a comprehensive and inclusive approach grounded in diverse insights and collective input is essential to achieve a truly resilient and prosperous future for all Maldivians.
