Tekfen Construction
in Azerbaijan
Since its first project started in 1995, Tekfen Construction has successfully undertaken a number of projects with a total value of 1.4 billion USD to date.
Partnership with SOCAR, State Oil Company of Azerbaijan, with the establishment of Azfen JV in 1996, is considered as an important milestone in Tekfen’s long term association and commitment to the Caspian region, specifically in the oil & gas industry.
Seventeen years of coherent partnership, shared experience, participation in world class projects in the Caspian basin, the large, untapped resource of oil and natural gas, carried Tekfen and its young affiliate Azfen JV to new borders as onshore-offshore terminal and platform builders. Its 17 year-long presence in Azerbaijan has also provided a chance for Tekfen to demonstrate its corporate culture: full awareness of social responsibility while respecting cultural, societal, environmental characteristics of the country.
One particular achievement worth mentioning is Tekfen’s 2009 world record of 33,762,037 Manhours without DAFWC (Day Away From Work Case) in ACG Field Development Phase 1, 2 & 3 Onshore Terminal Main Construction Works project in Sangachal, a clear indication of Tekfen’s quality and strict adherence to the highest HSE regulations.
Ongoing Projects in Azerbaijan
Investments in the Caspian Region continue as its rich oil and natural gas reserves are exploited and exports increase and as such, the area is a strategically important market for Tekfen Construction. New business opportunities await Tekfen in this particular area, where it has acquired significant expertise. The development of the Shah Deniz gas reserves is among Azerbaijan’s newest projects planned. The building of two new platforms and the capacity expansion of the existing terminal and pipeline are among the upcoming projects Tekfen is following together with Azfen JV most closely. The Azerbaijan Government’s investment plans for additional refinery and petro-chemical facilities constitute the Company’s primary focus in the mid-term.
The West Chirag Oil-drilling Platform is one of the largest projects Tekfen has undertaken in this area. The platform, started in 2010 by the Azfen-Tekfen-AMEC (ATA) Consortium and this contract valued at $342 million, is part of the in Azeri-Chirag-Güneşli (ACG) oilfield Phase 3 investments in Azerbaijan for capacity increase. Weighing 18,500 tons with its production facilities, drilling module and living units, the platform anchored to the seabed on 170 m-deep steel abutments just recently, in September 2013. Tekfen Bayıl Steel Fabrication Plant undertook all the erection, testing and commissioning work.
Tekfen Construction’s ongoing flagship project is at the same time Azerbaijan's most important and prestigious high-rise construction project, namely SOCAR’s New Administration Office Building with app. 100,000 m2 of Gross Floor Area. The construction of the 40 storey, 200 metre high tower building, a 5 story podium annexe (2 basement and 3 storeys above ground level) and a large underground parking area started in 2010 and is scheduled for completion in 2014.
Tekfen’s latest challenge in Azerbaijan, is the design and building of the Baku Olympic Stadium near the Boyuk Shor Lake in a record time of 24 months. The stadium, to host the 1st European Games in 2015, will have a capacity of 68.000 seats and a total site area of 496.000 sqm, 204.000 sqm of which will contain commercial areas as well as disabled, public, media, CIP, VIP and VVIP Sections.
Future Prospects
Azerbaijan is continually developing through its rich oil and natural gas resources. The country offers Tekfen, which has extensive infrastructure and experience in this country, and its affiliate, Azfen JV, important business opportunities. Accordingly, Tekfen is closely monitoring the Shah Deniz Phase-2 (Shah Deniz Full Field Development) project, which will enable the export of gas from Azerbaijan to Turkey and to Europe. The agreement Turkey and Azerbaijan signed on 25 October 2011 for the purchase and transport of Shah Deniz Phase-2 gas was an important milestone. Tekfen is also taking a close interest in industrial projects such as the new Oil Gas Processing and Petrochemical Complex (OGPC) to be developed and constructed by SOCAR near Baku and additionally fertilizer plants, high rise buildings and Olympic stadium.
Good Corporate Citizenship
Tekfen recognizes that sustainable development is crucial in all areas of its business and that only by strengthening its links with society and the environment in which it operates will it be able to achieve this. Therefore, it has made working in harmony with society and the natural environment one of its fundamental principles. Sensitively approaching social development and environmental preservation, Tekfen supports projects that enhance the public good and forms collaborative ventures with non-governmental organizations as a way of contributing to progress in this area.
In line with Tekfen Holding’s corporate standing, Tekfen Construction devotes resources to social responsibility projects as part of its own program and priorities.
