Caspian Energy (CE): How would you assess the current situation in the sphere of energy security provision in Europe and what is the contribution of Lithuania into this process?
Arvydas Sekmokas, Minister of Energy of the Republic of Lithuania: Europe finds energy security and energy supply issues very important especially after the 2009 gas crisis fixed in Ukraine. Since then considerable changes were introduced in the issue of providing safe supply of energy resources for Europe. The third energy package and a new European legislation aimed at gradual creating of a single energy market were passed. Lithuania made a very important step forward in this issue as the parliament of our country brought its legislation to conformity with that of EU. I.e. Lithuania decided to introduce the issue of property division. It is noteworthy that such companies as Gazprom and E.ON Ruhrgas voted for property division at the last session of the shareholders. Thus, they admitted the supremacy of the Lithuanian law and agreed to act on the basis of the new legislation. It was a very important step in fact; and I assume that it will indeed become a turning point for other EU countries that depend on gas supply flowing from the Russian direction.
