Kazakhstan is working on the restoration of the Aral Sea, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev

Kazakhstan has learned serious lessons from the tragedy of the Aral Sea and has been systematically working on its restoration for more than 20 years. Thanks to these efforts, the Northern Aral has been preserved, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev stated in his address to the people of the country.

“The surface area of the water body has increased by 36%, and the water volume has nearly doubled, which has halved the mineralization indicator. However, efforts to raise the water level in the Aral Sea must continue actively,” he emphasized.

According to him, the declining level of the Caspian Sea is causing concern among citizens.

“If appropriate measures are not taken, the situation could worsen, potentially leading to a large-scale environmental disaster. Therefore, at the recent expanded meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in China, I specifically addressed this issue and proposed the initiative to establish a SCO Water Issues Research Center,” the Head of State noted.

Tokayev added that the condition of the Caspian Sea concerns not just one country, but the entire region, and therefore the situation can only be improved through joint efforts.

“The government should begin developing an interstate program for the preservation of the Caspian Sea’s water resources, in coordination with our partners. Overall, the fate of our children and grandchildren directly depends on how wisely we address water-related issues today,” President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said.
