US President Donald Trump has warned Kazakhstan, South Korea, Japan, and several other countries that a 25% tariff on imports of their goods will be introduced starting August 1. On his social media platform, Truth Social, he published letters he had sent to the leaders of these countries, reports the BBC.
“It is a great honor for me to send you this letter, as it demonstrates the strength of our trade relations and the fact that the United States is willing to continue working with Kazakhstan, despite a significant trade deficit with your great country,” Fergana quotes from the letter addressed to Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Trade and Integration has pledged to respond to Trump’s letter.
In 2024, the United States accounted for 3% of Kazakhstan’s total trade turnover. In previous years, the figure hovered around 2%. At the same time, the trade balance was in favor of the US, with a surplus of $200 million.
